The Town Clerk’s office is the record-keeping department for the Town of Durham. The Office issues licenses and records, maintains and preserves vital records (birth, marriage and death), the Municipal Code of Ordinances, and other official documents.
The Office is also responsible for dogs, hunting, fishing, boats, ATVs, snowmobiles, and business licenses. The Town Clerk administers all aspects of elections, voter registration, and campaign finance, as well as board, committee, and commission openings and applications and Notary Public services.

Dog Registrations
Dog licenses are done by calendar year. The expiration date is December 31. Licenses are available for the following year beginning on October 15 and a late fee of $25 per dog is applied beginning February 1st. To avoid the late fee, register your dog online (currently unavailable), come to the Town Office, or register your dog through the mail between October 15th and January 31st each year.
- The cost to register a spayed dog is: $6, or $11 for intact, female or male.
- Per Maine law, all dogs six (6) months and older are required to be registered.
- New dog registrations are accepted at any time during the year.

To register a dog at the Durham Town Office:
- Bring a copy of the current rabies certificate and proof if the dog has been spayed or neutered recently. You may pay by check, cash or credit card (MasterCard, Visa, Discover). With credit card use, there will be a 2.95% additional charge (convenience fee) to the customer with a minimum fee of $1.95.

- Maine resident fishing licenses cost $25 plus a $2 service fee. For other options please refer to this IFW website.
- Freshwater fishing licenses include the saltwater recreational fish registry. The saltwater fish recreational registry only can be done through our office for a $2 service fee or through the Department of Marine Resources website.
- Any resident or non-resident 16 years or older must possess a valid fishing license.
- Hunting licenses cost $26 plus a $2 service fee. Proof of Hunter Safety Course completion or previously issued hunting license is required. For other license options or more information please refer to this IFW website.

Vehicle Registration Information
If you have a vehicle to register for the first time, you will need to come to the Durham Town Offices. Re-registrations can be done online or at the Town Office.
Excise tax is paid as a percentage of the MSRP when the vehicle was new.

Various specialty license plates are available at our office and are an additional $20 for the first year, with most falling to $15 every year thereafter. Vanity plates are an additional $25 each year and are available only through the Bureau of Motor Vehicles.
To register a new vehicle purchased from a dealer please bring:
- Proof of residency
- Application for Title (blue form) or Title (all vehicles 1995 and newer require Titles)
- Bill of sale (proof of sales tax payment)
- Munroney Label (this is the window sticker and is only required on new vehicles)
- Proof of automobile insurance (the card must list the new vehicle)
To register a new vehicle purchased in a private sale please bring:
- Proof of residency
- Title transferred by a signature on the back (all vehicles 1995 and newer require Titles)
- Bill of sale (please include VIN number, description of vehicle, seller’s name and address, and the price)
- Proof of automobile insurance
To register a vehicle previously registered in a different state please bring:
- Proof of Durham residency
- Title (all vehicles 1999 and newer require Titles) or name and address of lien holder
- Original registration from previous state
- Proof of automobile insurance
To re-register a vehicle please bring:
- Proof of residency (if the vehicle was not previously registered in Durham)
- Most recent registration
- Proof of automobile insurance
Vitals
Birth, Marriage and Death Certificates
They are available at the Town Office during regular office hours. Certificates are $15 for the first one and $6 for each additional of the same certificate requested during the same visit.
In order to receive a certified copy, you must be a party listed on the certificate, or be a direct relative with proof of your relationship. Identification is required.
Requests can be processed through the mail. Please send a written request stating names and dates, a copy of your driver’s license and proper payment to:

Marriage licenses
They are available at the Town Office during regular office hours. One of the parties must be a Durham resident or, if both reside outside of Maine, they must intend to be married in Maine. If either party has been married previously, a certified copy of the Divorce or Death Certificate is required. Cost for a marriage license is $40. Both parties must be present and it will take approximately 30 minutes to complete. Marriage licenses are available immediately and are good for ninety (90) days from issuance.
The Town Office will perform marriages for a fee of $30 by appointment only.
